During the presidential campaign, President Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. warned the public for close fire in the Department of Health and Human Services if President Trump were re -elected. Now that he is again president, his administration has begun fulfilling the commitment to clean up thousands of HHS agencies, including centers for control and prevention of diseases, National Institutes of Health, Food and Administration of Drugs, Medicare and Medicaid Services Centers and Medicaid Centers and Indian health service
Approximately 5,200 test workers from agencies began to receive a letter from their employer saying “You are not suitable for continuous employment because your ability, knowledge and skills do not fit the current needs of the agency.”
The cuts are among the thousands that are issued this month across the federal government, all as part of attempts to reduce Federal workforce size. Fires are being overseen by President Trump and the labor force led by Elon Musk, the government efficiency department.
All the latest classes of employment, approximately 1,300 individuals who serve in the CDC epidemic intelligence service were told on Friday that they were being fired, according to CBS News. CDC EIS officials are sometimes called “disease detectives” investigating new threats, from anthrax to Ebola to bird flu. The fired group consists of nearly half of the EIS CDC officers.
It seems that cuts on staff at CMS include people employed to perform oversight of affordable care exchanges. It was unknown at this time that other CMS workers were among those who rested.
Cuttings on the test staff have also occurred in NIH. What is not clear is yet what specific parts of the agency are aiming. It is possible for this initial Salvo to be a prelude to what Kennedy stated before the elections for “stopping infectious disease programs” and shot 600 employees in NIH. Or, as a result, it is credible for NIH movements to signal a desire to cut approximately half of the number of institutes and centers of NIH from 27 to 15, something that Republican lawmakers have argued that it should happen.
The Trump administration also fired the FDA staff. So far, it seems that the majority of the employees who end up are in food divisions, medical equipment and agency tobacco. It is not surprising that the FDA, and especially the separation of food and food, would be a target of cleansing. In an interview, Kennedy said that “there are entire departments, like the FDA Department of Food that should go, who are not doing their job, they are not protecting our children.” Moreover, Kennedy wrote on X just before the November elections. “If you work for FDA and you are part of this corrupt system, I have two messages to you: 1. Save your data and 2. Pack your bags.”
Employees working in FDA drug approval applications appear to be “mostly spared for now”, according to a tweet posted by Adam Feuerstein of Status. But Zach Brennan of News of the last points Tweeted that “sources say that the probative FDA employees under the users still struck by cuts – without more than the big hit will be on PDUFA dates”.
The dates of the prescription drug user tariff act are essentially the deadlines set by the FDA to meet its review for a new drug requirement or a biological license request. Congress approved and President George HW Bush signed PDUFA, a law providing FDA resources to make the process of reviewing and approving drugs more efficient. In 2024, $ 3.3 billion, or almost 46% of the agency budget of $ 7.2 billion, came from user tariffs, payments made by pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturers to finance staff resources required to review products in order fast about their safety and efficiency.
Neither Kennedy nor likely to be confirmed by the MAKARY FDA Commissioner can unilaterally give up PDUFA. But it is possible for agencies to pour staff, including the test workers involved in the drug approval process. Their jobs are done to some extent possible by user fees. But given the dislike of HHS Kennedy’s secretary for user tariffs, it would not be surprising if more holidays in this FDA work area will come.
In particular, staff fires in NIH, CDC, FDA and CMS are happening in front of their respective heads, Jay Bhattacharya, Dave Weldon, Marty Makary and Mehmet Oz are confirmed by the Senate. This implies that fires occurred without their official contribution.
